Domestic Landscapes: Croatia in Europe

20.09.2013 - 11.11.2013

Other exhibitions

The exhibition has been produced in collaboration with the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in the Republic of Croatia and the Ethnographic Museum in Zagreb.

Bert Teunissen, artist and photographer from The Netherlands, has been working on the project Domestic Landscapes for the past sixteen years.  The photographs show a space and its inhabitants, resulting in a series of portraits of people in interiors, the spaces in which they live, in various countries throughout Europe. The domestic landscapes tell of the identities, similarities and differences in the habits of life in rural houses in Europe, which under the influences of contemporary forms of living are slowly vanishing. His photographs have not only artistic but also an exceptional documentary value.  Shooting people in a given moment in which he meets and gets to know them, the author gets into the domain of their privacy, their everyday life, which is illustrated in a very particular and interesting manner. For this reason in the photographs exhibited it can be seen that the people are taken during their daily rituals – during their afternoon break over a cup of tea, during the time of lunch preparation, during time for fun or during their work.

Before coming to Dubrovnik, the exhibition was on show in the Ethnographic Museum in Zagreb marking Croatian entry into the European Union.
