Roman Imperial Portrait on Silver Coins from the Holdings of the Archaeological Museum in Dubrovnik

28.06.2019 - 31.07.2019

Other exhibitions

The exhibition has been produced by Dubrovnik Museums, Archaeological Museum.

The exhibition for the first time presents to the public part of the collection given to Dubrovnik Museums by Mrs Vinka Zorenč.  Over 500 antique coins were donated, and for the exhibition, according to the criteria of condition, excellence and fineness of details, 45 Roman silver coins, denarii, have been chosen.

In the treatment of the material, the focus has been placed on the portraits of the emperors and members of their families. The changes in the trends in art over the centuries have been accentuated. The pronounced realism of the first century BC was gradually replaced by a process of abstraction and iconisation, peaking in the middle of the 4th century.

It is hoped that the exhibition will spur the public to further donations of material to the appropriate museums, since this is the best way in which the heritage can be properly valued and preserved.
