Marking the 115th year since the tram in Dubrovnik was put into service and the 55th year since it ceased operating, on Wednesday, August 27, 2025, in the Rector’s Palace, Dubrovnik Museums opened the exhibition The History of the Dubrovnik Tram from 1910 to 1970, created by Dino Lokas, Tonko Marunčićand Jan Marko Novalija.
The exhibition shows the history of the development of the tram in Dubrovnik, from the arrival of the first tram car and trailer (beiwagen) in 1910 down to the tragic accident and the final withdrawal of tram services in 1970. As well as items from the collections of the Cultural History Museum, visitors can also view archival documents, photographs, picture postcards and pieces of tram equipment from private Dubrovnik collectors and tram aficionados. One whole segment of the show is devoted to the restoration of a surviving tramcar and trailer, throwing additional light on the technical and cultural heritage of this unique form of public transport in Dubrovnik. The Dubrovnik tram was known affectionately among the local people as Travanj, or April, and is the one and only tram ever to have operated in Dalmatia. During its six decades of existence it was witness to numerous social and economic changes, and has an ensured place in the memories of numerous generations of citizens.
